Build the life you deserve
Based at the Neroli Clinic this clinic on focuses on diet, movement, sleep, mental health and all the good stuff that helps us feel, and be, well.
Looking at hormones, HRT, health and wellbeing this clinic is open to all Jersey residents and is based at St Martin's Surgery.
My name is Jo Darwood, and I am a GP and now lifestyle medicine coach.
With more than 2 decades of experience in medicine, the last 15 of which have been in general practice I have seen first hand the effect modern living is having on our health.
I have seen increasing numbers of patients coming to my clinic with problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, poor mental health and obesity. I know that at least half of this is due to their lifestyle. Most doctors know that lifestyle changes are an important factor in improving their patients' health but in a 10 minute appointment it is difficult to offer anything more meaningful than advice to "lose weight", "stop smoking", "stop drinking" or "do more exercise". And then reach for the prescription pad.
After studying Lifestyle Medicine in greater depth I realised that the most important thing I could do for people was to help them understand the effect their lifestyle was having on their health and wellbeing and then guide them in exploring their options, to implement long lasting, effective change.
I also thought I'd better practice what I was hoping to preach. I made some changes to my diet and started prioritising my mental health. Without really noticing I lost 13kg (2 stone), started exercising more easily, improved my horrible perimenopausal PMT and now feel happier than I have in years. So yes, I really know this can work.
When not at work I am a mum, who like so many people is trying to juggle work and family while trying to carve out chunks of time for exercise and healthy living.
At Inspired Life my main goal is to educate and inspire people to make powerful change in their lives. This is based on evidence, research and over 20 years of experience.
You won't find any detoxes, crash diets, extreme fitness or mumbo jumbo here. Just effective, supportive coaching to help you improve your health whilst gaining a broader understanding of your needs, both mental and physical.
Using a process I think of as layering we can work towards implementing small changes that accumulate over weeks and months, resulting in a healthy mind and body.
I offer a range of services, from one off education appointments, to regular life coaching sessions which aim to help you stick to your goals and inspire you to achieve more than you would have ever thought possible.
Using this approach it is possible to improve and even treat conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic pain and depression. Often allowing you to avoid, reduce or stop medication.
Inspired Life works because it supports you in making small, steady, long lasting changes. I only ever recommend strategies that are proven to work and often ones that offer more than one health benefit - why just lose weight when you can also cut your risk of cancer and heart attacks at the same time.
There are no failures here at Inspired Life because you and I know that slip ups are part of being human, and I am here to get you back on track.
Health is not something we achieve once and then forget about. It is something we develop and maintain throughout our lives, so let's make sure it's as easy and enjoyable as possible.
Lifestyle medicine offers a way of taking back control of numerous medical conditions. Focussing on the whole person rather than just test results; and recommending strategies that make you feel better as well as treating your condition. It's side effect and risk free - something that cannot be said about the majority of medications and medical procedures.
Fed up of fad diets that don't work, of conflicting advice and confusing plans? Combining evidence based nutritional advice and supportive coaching you can discover what works best, uniquely for you.
Unused gym kit stashed under your desk? Roll mats and random pieces of yoga equipment you've used just the once? A stack of fitness DVDs guiltily sitting by the TV? Sound familiar? Let's work together to find an activity program that works for you.
Life is becoming more and more hectic. As a result more of us are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed. Our sleep is suffering and so are our relationships. Let me help you find some peace and relaxation.
We need to talk about this! So many women struggle needlessly with their periods and then through the months and years of their menopause. Let me inform and guide you as you make your way through this specially challenging phase of life.
Even prior to the pandemic businesses have struggled with staff illness. It costs companies millions of pounds every year. Investing in staff wellbeing, whether through seminars, wellness weeks or one to one coaching sessions will result in a healthier, happier and more productive workforce.
Six months ago I was an almost 60, slightly overweight, bloated, pre diabetic. I also take a low dose of medication for high blood pressure.
The thought of diabetes and statins at 60 filled me with horror.
I have always considered myself to be reasonably fit and have maintained a healthy eating way of life.
I was discussing Inspired life with my daughter and had booked a six appointment course with Jo.
I can honestly say from my first consultation I have never looked back.
Jo is a qualified GP who offered me honest and factual advice on how to change my life. She has provided me with advice, encouragement and bucket loads of tips of how to make changes for the better.
I have a go to folder with handy hints of do and don’t when it comes to shopping and meal planning.
She had never tried to sell me pills or potions and explains in plain terms how the body works.
6 months later I have lost 20 pounds in weight, (it may not sound a lot but it has been consistent and stayed off)
I have heaps more energy, no more flaking out on the sofa in the evening and have discovered a whole new passion for cooking and experimenting with recipes.
My blood sugar is reducing nicely, my blood pressure is lower and most importantly I feel better in myself.
My goal is to be able to come off my blood pressure medication and keep reducing my blood sugar levels.
I no longer crave sugar or in between meal snacks.
I will continue consult with Jo in the future and would encourage anyone in my situation to do the same.
I am happy to continue to share my story and am externally grateful to Jo for inspiring me.
